Included are Clark's correspondence, accounts, bonds, and papers concerning his lands in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Virginia; deed book; notebook relating to improvements made by settlers in the Northern Neck of Virginia in 1786; legal records, 1756-97, of Spotsylvania County, Virginia; legal fee bills; papers of Jost Hite about his lands in the Northern Neck of Virginia, 1734-60; contemporary transcript of the record in the case of Jost Hite et al. vs. Thomas Lord Fairfax et al., 1749-1786, confirming Hite's title to the land; other records, 1786-07, relating to land and litigation involving Jost Hite, Robert Green, William Duff, and Robert McKay, including documents drawn by John Marshall' letters, 1786-1812, to Isaac Hite and Colonel John Green from their attorney, John Taylor of Caroline Co., and others; papers, 1773-95, of Isaac Hite including land papers. Richard Clough Anderson was born on January 12, 1750 at Goldmine, Hanover County, Virgina, to Robert Anderson, the son of a Scottish immigrant, and Elizabeth Clough. Richard was educated at home and at the age of 16 entered into an apprenticeship with Patrick Coots, a local merchant.
